Why is the former law minister Zaid Ibrahim is against the new law which is proposed to curb "fake news"?
Zaid Ibrahim’s hysteric reaction is bewildering considering that the proposed law is in it’s preliminary stages only and has not been implemented yet. However, there is already a “huha” being created about the law already.
Logic would suggest that only those who are spreading fake news should be worried about this new law if it’s implemented.
Today social media has become source channel for fake news.
Zaid knows this very well and is worried that the Opposition would be handicapped without their armoury of fake propaganda which is dutifully spread by their red bean army and Sarawak Report like portals.
More often than not, if a news is carried in Malaysiakini and Free Malaysia Today even a fake news becomes genuine news. For the opposition, regardless of its authenticity, any news that slams or criticizes the Government, it is spread far and wide.
Zaid is so worried that for those who are spreading fake news for the advantage of Pakatan will charged. People will be more responsible with new law and this would mean the Opposition’s major mojo would be gone.
Currently we are losing our peace and harmony at the expense of fake news. In fact, it has been detrimental to the country’s economy and most importantly, sovereignty.
If such news are not checked properly and verified this could even threatened national security in future.
I do not see any harm in implementing this law for the sake of the wellbeing of the country and its people.
On a final note, I advice Zaid not to get stressed out over how the new law is going to work and, instead leave it to AG and his office to educate the people on this law for the greater good.
